Merry Christmas from all at Ecolicious!

December 13th, 2010 admin

We can’t believe it’s December already! We were aiming to have the Ecolicious Foods web store ready and online in time for Christmas, but the festive season has snuck up on us so quickly that unfortunately we’re not quite ready yet :(

Like many start-up companies, we’ve had our fair share of teething problems, so – we hope you’ll understand – we’ve decided to postpone our site’s launch until early next year. With an amazing selection of wonderful organic products coming to the store from some of the UK’s and Europe’s finest producers, we promise you it’ll be worth the wait! Why not follow us on Twitter or “like” us on Facebook to stay up to date with the latest Ecolicious developments?

Until then, have a fabulous free-range Christmas and an organic New Year!

US Government awards grant to study organic greens

November 30th, 2010 admin

Thanks to the US Government, our friends across the pond have been given the green light – and a hefty $2.9 million grant – to study organic ways of keeping organic food free from bacteria. Agricultural scientists at the University of Arizona recently announced how they’ll be investing the cash into developing ways of keeping harmful bacteria, like Salmonella and E. coli, at bay in bagged organic produce, without resorting to chemical bactericides.

“We are going to test whether certain plant extracts and essential oils inactivate bacteria if incorporated into an edible film lining the insides of the bags in which leafy greens are sold or as pieces of edible film mixed into the salad”, said Dr. Sadhana Ravishankar from the university’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It is hoped that this research will lead to commercially viable ways of producing organic greens that won’t leave you green around the gills!

Other projects funded by the grant include an investigation into how well organic tea compost helps organic crops to grow, monitoring bacterial contamination levels of irrigation waters on organic farms, and how well washing fruits and vegetables removes bacteria from the food’s surface.

Plight of the bumblebee

November 18th, 2010 admin

Though there is no proven, discernable effect of modern pesticide use on human health, they do upset the natural balance of wild predator-prey relationships and, like DDT in the 1970s, which is attributed to the near complete extinction of the beautiful Peregrine falcon, pesticides can threaten the fantastic biodiversity found in the UK.

Pesticides used today are much safer than DDT ever was, but a new book called The Systemic Insecticides: A Disaster in the Making by toxicologist Dr Henk Tennekes reveals that a group of our most commonly used pesticides called neonicotinoids, may be responsible for the dramatic decline in our bee population. Bees, as well as producing delicious local honey, play a crucial role in the pollination of plants, and without them, the very foundation of agriculture, let alone organic agriculture, could be shaken.

Here at Ecolicious, we’re 100% committed to natural and organic produce, and we support a ban on neonicotinoids to help ensure the health and future of our honeybees and other pollinating insects. Check out what the Soil Association has to say with its 5 ways to help honeybees.

All Ecolicious animal produce comes from free range, well-treated, organically reared animals

Hi, my name’s Lisa, chief blogger here on the official Ecolicious Foods blog. We’re so excited about our new company that we wanted to start sharing with you before our main website is even ready yet, but believe me; it will be worth the wait!

So what is Ecolicious all about? Well, our ethos is simple; the produce we sell is eco-friendly and delicious. We firmly believe that organic food not only tastes better, but it’s better for our animals and for the environment too – so it’s all we sell! Our animal produce originates from well-treated, free range animals and our plant-based foods have never even seen a pesticide sprayer, let alone been genetically modifed!

We’ve searched high and low all over the UK and Europe to find some of the most exciting and original non-perishable organic brands to deliver directly to your door. But don’t worry about all those food miles – as an environmentally and socially responsible company, we offset 100% of our carbon emissions.

On our blog we’ll be sharing news and views related to organic food and farming, as well as keeping you up to date with what’s new at Ecolicious. We look forward to being able to welcome you into our virtual store very soon, so stay tuned!
